Why Women’s Day is Worth Promoting

International Women’s Day is right around the corner – coming up on March 8th! Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, and also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.  Across the pond (especially in Europe), Women’s Day is widely celebrated by giving women flowers, but we don’t see the holiday embraced as much here in the United States, and we’d like to change that. Here are five reasons you should be promoting Women’s Day in your shop!

1. You’re supporting a cause that many people feel drawn to.

You may be hesitant to tread too closely to what some may consider to be a political line, especially given the current state of the social and political landscape, but gender equality is one of those causes that’s pretty safe, and is widely supported. Women’s Day is about acknowledging the extraordinary achievements of women and continuing to work towards bridging the gender gap. Like other holidays, Women’s Day is a celebration!

There’s also been a widespread social movement towards women supporting women and promoting more of a sisterhood mentality. There have been numerous acceptance, anti-violence, and anti-bullying campaigns, many of which have drawn attention to issues that women face among each other, and have spread messages of love and support in an effort to extinguish the criticism and antagonistic messages women commonly face from each other.

2. The Millennial customer base loves socially conscious businesses & shopping locally.

Millennials make up nearly a quarter of the population in America, and have about $200 BILLION of annual buying power. They’re also more selective consumers, with a general mindset shift moving towards spending their money at businesses that share their views, support their causes, give back to the community, and are local. They expect companies to be socially conscious, they value authenticity, and want to engage with brands on social platforms. When a Millennial consumer finds a brand with which they align, they become fiercely loyal, which bodes well for repeat business. Generally speaking, Millennials are a very socially and politically active group, and making a connection with them will give you a customer for life!

3. It’s a great opportunity to show solidarity and align yourself with the advancement of your primary customers.

It’s no secret that the majority of recipients of flowers are women. Promoting Women’s Day is a great way to show support to your primary customer base! Creating specialty bouquets or arrangements to add to your product line specifically for Women’s Day makes it easier for those who do the purchasing to select a gift. Unlike Valentine’s Day when red roses are prevalent, Women’s Day gives you the opportunity to create some truly unique designs with a variety of blooms! While roses are still a popular choice, other top sellers include yellow mimosas, tulips, orchids, and lilies.

4. You’ll be at the forefront of bringing a global holiday more recognition in the U.S.

Women’s Day is very widely celebrated internationally (just ask our sales rep Aga about how they celebrate in Poland!), and one of the most common gifts is flowers. Traditionally, men buy flowers for their female companions, family members, and even colleagues, but women also take this opportunity to show appreciation for each other! While Women’s Day is recognized as a holiday in the U.S., and March is considered Women’s History Month, it still isn’t widely celebrated, so helping this movement gain traction is one of the primary goals for Women’s Day activists here. By promoting Women’s Day, you will be at the forefront of championing this cause in America!

5. Everyone knows at least one extraordinary woman.

Think about the women in your life. Chances are, you probably know at least one or two that you think are extraordinary. While Valentine’s Day is traditionally about romance, Women’s Day offers an opportunity to acknowledge women platonically, and without the assumption or inference of romantic love. Nearly everyone has a woman in their life who has had a positive influence and lasting impact on them, whether they are sisters, mothers, grandmothers, cousins, aunts, or friends. Women’s Day is about the empowerment and appreciation of any and all women!

Meet Holly

We are SO excited to welcome guest designer Holly Heider Chapple to Minneapolis for an EXCLUSIVE appearance at our spring wedding design show, Saison D’Amour: Designing for Weddings of the Four Seasons! Some of you may have heard of Holly as she is very well known in the industry. Take advantage of this opportunity to see her for a one-time presentation in Minnesota.

This will be a three-day event! It will feature a series of limited hands-on workshops on Saturday, March 4th, Holly will be presenting at the main program on Sunday, March 5th, and a limited hands-on class with Holly will be held on Monday, March 6th. Holly Heider Chapple

Holly Heider Chapple founded her wedding and event floral design business 24
years ago. The business was home based and offered Holly an opportunity to
make a living while raising her family. At the time the studio primarily focused on
weddings and events in the Washington DC area, as well as luxury destination
weddings. Over the years, the Holly Heider Chapple Flowers brand continued to
grow and gain international recognition. This was primarily a result of Holly’s
involvement in social media and the popularity of her then active blog, The Full
Bouquet. In 2011 Holly’s husband Evan joined the company and the studio saw
another serious period of growth. Evan’s involvement allowed Holly the
opportunity to focus on other aspects of the business while Evan started a
lighting and drape division. Evan also began restoring the family cutting gardens
which had been abandoned over the years due to Holly’s intense wedding
schedule.

Just before Evan joined the company in 2010, Holly founded The Chapel
Designers, which is an international collective of wedding and event floral
designers. The organization educates, supports and mentors creatives while
encouraging the authenticity of each designer. Holly and Evan host the Chapel
Designers workshops internationally, throughout the USA and at their new farm,
Hope Flower Farm. Hope farm is a registered bed and breakfast as well as a
flower school. Holly is a supporter of the American Grown Slow Flower
movement. In addition Holly has taught her signature style of design in Moscow,
Australia, China and London, the industry call is “Hollyish”.

Holly and her husband Evan will celebrate 30 years of marriage this January and
are the proud parents of seven wonderful children ranging in age from 7 to 29.

MONDAY, MARCH 6th – Hands-On Class with Holly!

Monday’s class will feature Holly in an intimate, casual, classroom setting. She will teach one full-day class on designing for weddings. She will also share her unique tricks of the trade that have propelled her to the peak of the industry. Students will have the opportunity to work on a bridal bouquet, urn design, compote design, and king table design. This is an advanced class is wedding floral design, and you are required to bring your own tools. This opportunity is exclusive to Koehler & Dramm. Class will begin at 8:00 AM and end at 3:00 PM.

Reserve your seat for just $299. Space for Monday’s class is limited to the first 25 designers to sign up, and seats will sell out extremely quickly!

Meet the 2016 Classic Designers!

Koehler & Dramm is very excited to welcome Tim Farrell AIFD AAF PFCI and Deborah De La Flor AIFD PFCI to our facility for the 2016 Fall & Winter Classic design show and trade fair on Saturday, October 1st and Sunday, October 2nd! Get to know them before the show:

Tim Farrell AIFD, AAF, PFCI

Tim is an accomplished floral designer, known throughout the United States for his creations of beautiful floral compositions.  His understanding and ability to teach the elements and principles of floral design make him a sought after presenter for garden clubs, horticultural schools, and retail florist organizations throughout the country.

He opened Farrell’s Florist in Drexel Hill, PA in 1983, while attending Villanova and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Villanova University in 1984.

Tim served as the 2014-2015 President of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Floral Designers ( AIFD) , the premier accreditation body in floral design in the United States.

Tim’s work has been showcased in the Philadelphia Flower Show as a featured designer in the gallery of AIFD, as a guest speaker for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and as a judge for the competitive classes for several years.

The American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) inducted Tim into its membership in 2001.   Tim was inducted to Professional Floral Communicators International (PFCI) in 2006, and is a member of the World Flower Council.

Tim’s work has appeared several times in the national publication FLOWERS&.  Tim also designed and produced the stage arrangements for the 2001 Presidential Inauguration Ball in Washington, DC.  And has been recently assisting White House staff if floral décor for special events beginning in 2014.  In 2016 Tim’s talents were put to use designing flowers for the US papal visit of Pope Francis in Washington DC and Philadelphia PA.

In May 2009, Tim was chosen as the florist spokesperson for Teleflora to promote the benefits of hand arranged, hand delivered flowers on national television through the HSN Network.

From 2006 until 2010, Tim was a member of the Oscars design team assembled by Charisma Designs, which created the floral designs for the Red Carpet and the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, CA for the annual Academy of Motion Pictures awards show.

In 2007, Tim was honored to represent the United States in an international design competition in Tokyo Japan.

Tim has been invited to be the featured presenter at the annual meeting of the World Flower Council in Kenya, Africa in September 2016.

Deborah De La Flor AIFD, PFCI
FTD Education Consultant

Deborah De La Flor’s talent, innovative style and passion for flowers have made her a world-renowned floral designer. For more than 30 years, her passion for flowers has taken her around the world and allowed her to share her love for the floral industry through design presentations, seminars, competitions and commentary.

Deborah’s ability to anticipate and influence the latest floral trends has led to her consulting for some of the biggest names in the floral industry. Her vast knowledge, down-to-earth demeanor and infectious enthusiasm make her a sought-after presenter for floral industry events. Deborah has also added AIFD Certified Floral Evaluator/Judge to her long list of accomplishments. She is the author of the floral design book Florsages:  The Art of Floral Body Design.

Her many accolades include Florida State Designer of the Year and winner of the FTD Great Masters Design Competition. Most recently, Deborah had the honor of serving as a judge for the 2015 Interflora World Cup in Berlin, Germany. She was a featured presenter at the 2012 AIFD National Symposium, and she was inducted into the Professional Floral Communicators International (PFCI) in 2006. Deborah represented the United States at the Interflora World Cup in Melbourne, Australia, in 2004.  She was also the first runner up at the FTD America’s Cup finals in 2000 and was inducted into the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) in 1996. Deborah has owned De La Flor Gardens in Fort Lauderdale, FL, for more than 25 years.

The 2016 Fall & Winter Classic is Coming!

The annual Fall & Winter Classic is coming, and it’s bringing thrills, chills and spills on October 1 & 2, 2016! (Ok, the chills are most likely from our floral cooler, and the spills are on you if you drop your lunch, but our special guests and our dedicated staff will bring the thrills!)

This year our guest designers are the renowned Tim Farrell AIFD AAF PFCI and Deborah De La Flor AIFD PFCI, who will present the latest and greatest designs, trends, and techniques for entertaining and decorating for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays! Get to know the designers here.

Saturday – 4:00-8:00 PM
Saturday evening’s events will feature a trade fair showcasing industry vendors from all over the world (showing us some international love!), the preliminary round of the Designer of the Year Competition during which the six finalists will be chosen, social hour and buying opportunities, and design session by local designer Lynne Tischler of Your Enchanted Florist followed by a one-hour design seminar by Tim Farrell on creating masterful harvest centerpieces for the fall season! Doors open at 3:45.

Sunday – 8:00 AM-4:30 PM
Then, we’re bringing the heat on Sunday with a full day of design seminars featuring Tim Farrell on stage in the morning and Deb De La Flor on stage in the afternoon. Both designers will be presenting their individual interpretations of fall and winter seasonal designs, including interior and exterior party arrangements and decor, top seasonal trends, and harvesting ideas that are perfect for the Midwest and will cover designs for every budget! Sunday’s events will also include the announcements of the winners of the 2016 Wedding Design Competition and the finalists of the Designer of the Year Competition, plus a showroom walk-through with our buying team to introduce you to the season’s top looks, a delicious lunch served by Buca di Beppo, and of course the raffle prize drawing and live auction where you will have the opportunity to purchase the designs created by Tim and Deb during their presentations. Doors open at 7:30.

Monday Classes – Level 1 – 8:00-11:00; Level 2 – 12:00-3:00
Tim will also be teaching two classes on Monday, October 3, 2016 that will use classic works of art to influence and inspire students’ floral designs. Level 1 will provide a look at the influences of classical styles on modern day design and an introduction to the principles and elements of design – an understanding of which is imperative to creating aesthetic designs! In the Level 2 session, Tim will dive further into creating works of floral art that embrace and evoke the classic masters, and advanced directives of the principles and elements covered in Level 1.

IMPORTANT: The Level 2 class is an advanced, fast-paced, and hands-on learning environment formatted for experienced designers! In order to take the Level 2 class you MUST have a solid understanding of the principles and elements of design, a mastery of design techniques and skills, a minimum of three years’ experience in the floral industry, and the ability to keep up with a rigorous pace. The Level 2 class will NOT be slowed down to accommodate novice designers.

You can attend both days of the Classic for one low price! Tickets are just $25 before 9/28/16, but the cost increases to $35 on 9/28/16, so get your tickets now! Monday class prices are $100 for Level 1 and $150 for Level 2. You are welcome to take both classes if you would like!

Hotel Information
For our guests from outside of the Minneapolis area, you may reserve a hotel room at one of our many metro area hotels. Please be aware that the weekend of the show coincides with the Ryder Cup, so availability may be limited.

Parking
There is limited lot and street parking available at Koehler & Dramm, but please get here early if you plan to drive. We highly recommend carpooling with your fellow designers! Other options include metro transit (we are right on the bus line) or Uber/Lyft.

Calling all designers! It’s that time again to show us what you’ve got. Get ready to compete for the title of 2017 Professional Floral Designer of the Year! Please note: due to popular demand we are modifying the student division from a competition to an exhibition.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 1st, when the preliminary round of the professional level competition and the student exhibition and will take place at Koehler & Dramm in conjunction with our Fall and Winter Classic (more show information is coming soon). Professional Theme: Line: An Elemental Spotlight
Line is defined as “the visual pathway that directs eye movement through
a composition—the distance between two points.” Lines can be vertical,
horizontal, diagonal, and curved. We invite you to take this opportunity to
become inclusive with this element of floral design and show us how you
express “line.” There are so many ways to incorporate line into a design and
we are excited to see the intensity and imagination of your line. While we
want you to focus your design on line, we remind you not to forget about
the other important principles and elements of design that you will still be
evaluated on as well. All are critical to a successful design—we just ask that
your line, shine.

Roses for Soldiers: Giving Back to Our Troops

We are very excited to announce that Roses for Soldiers is coming back again this July! In the years past, we have made July all about giving back by donating a portion of our rose sales for the month to charity organizations.This year is no different, but we were proud to announce a partnership with Operation Homefront in 2015 and we will be partnering with them again in 2016 to support a cause very close to our hearts. Operation Homefront is an organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to wounded warriors and military families in need, and we are pleased to say that our donations from this endeavor will benefit families that live right in Koehler & Dramm’s 5-state service area: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

A national nonprofit, Operation Homefront leads more than 2,500 volunteers with nationwide presence who provide emergency and other financial assistance to the families of service members and wounded warriors. Operation Homefront has provided assistance to thousands of military families since its inception in 2002. Recognized for superior performance by leading independent charity watchdog groups, nationally, 92% of Operation Homefront’s expenditures go directly to programs that provide support to our military families.

As the big Mother’s Day rush winds down, there is no hitting the brakes in the floral business, because the busy 2016 wedding season is hot on the holiday’s heels! Many designers may already be feeling the pressure from brides and grooms, and we are incredibly excited to offer a competitive opportunity to wedding designers yet again… the annual K&D Wedding Design Competition is back! Winners will be announced at our Fall & Winter Classic on October 1 & 2, 2016. One grand prize winner will receive a $1,000 marketing grant, and one Runner-Up and three Honorable Mention competitors will receive Finalist titles and bragging rights.

Q: Hello, Do you sell yet any organic fresh cut flowers? Fair trade? Eco friendly? No toxic chemicals? Inquiring because A LOT of my clients are demanding this. Thanks for any information!

A: Glad you asked! We make it a policy to only buy flowers from source farms who are committed to sustainability and abide by strict Veriflora standards. It’s also an opportunity to recognize women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements throughout history, and those yet to come. Every woman is unique, and a hero in her own right.
